January 2025
Current Status Report from Lou and the Steering Committee

Dear Gardeners:
I hope this email finds you relaxed, healthy and enjoying your first day of the new year.

While I know it has been extremely challenging for those of us who care so deeply for the Garden, I want to thank the Steering Committee and those of you who have continued to pour your time and effort into supporting this slice of paradise that has enhanced the lives of many of town residents.

Most of us understand and appreciate the value that the Garden and Preserve bring to not only ourselves, but to the town in general. It is important that we all remain hopeful for a positive outcome.  Gardening and green open spaces are universally known to have a positive impact on families and the environment. We ain’t dead yet!

One year ago, an 8–24 was approved by the Planning And Zoning Commission that puts the garden back in roughly the same location in which it now exists. Any change to that plan will require approval by the same commission.  I know that these commissioners take their job seriously, and I am confident that our land use boards and commissions have the knowledge, good sense and duty to make the best decisions for the Westport community, for Gardeners, for homeowners and other others impacted by the Muddy Brook watershed and for our environment.

As you know, we have been presented with an offer to build a new community garden at Barons South. While this offer may have been made with the best of intentions, it is, unfortunately, a severely compromised location for building a viable, functional and accessible garden.

We have reached out to the First Selectwoman for guidance as to when our access to the Garden will be restricted and are hoping to hear back soon. As the school building project has been delayed, we are hoping to be able to garden this spring.
I have faith that there are others out there who value community gardens, green open spaces and the multitude of environmental, social and educational benefits that they bring to our town.

I am hopeful that this ongoing process will result in a reasonable solution to preserve and protect the treasures that are the Westport Community Garden and Long Lots Preserve.

I truly wish that everyone has the healthiest and happiest year ever in 2025.
Lou

A message from the chairman

The Westport Community Gardens is a beautiful place, magical at times and challenging as well. Perhaps the dichotomy of the Gardens is what I find so appealing. It is so much work and brings us so much pleasure. Every year, intertwined so closely, are our myriad successes and failures.

Lou Weinberg, Chairman
